Despite significant personnel changes, today's group maintained itself as a successful country-rock band during the 1970s and early '80s, releasing ten albums and enjoying hits with different configurations of the group.The band was formed in Columbus, OH, in 1969 by a singer/ songwriter/guitarist , a singer/guitarist , a bass player, and a drummer.  The band took its name, the name of a women's temperance group in the 1939 Errol Flynn movie Dodge City, at the suggestion of the drummer. They built up a following in Ohio, playing around Cincinnati for a year before earning a record contract with RCA Victor. By that time,  personnel changes were beginning and the group went into the studio and recorded its self-titled debut album, which was released in March 1972 with a cover depicting a Western character named Luke, an illustration drawn by famed naturalist painter Norman Rockwell that had first appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post in 1927. Luke would turn up on all the band's subsequent album covers, giving them a distinctive visual conception. The eponymous debut did not sell well enough to reach the charts, and the group fragmented. Many, many more personnel changes took place and a follow-up was recorded. Among the other session musicians on the album was Mick Ronson, who played guitar and arranged the strings. Though later considered a landmark in country-rock, it initially suffered disappointing sales upon release in September 1972, and RCA dropped the group. But there were more changes in personnel, and the band continued to play around the Midwest. During this period, one of the founders encountered legal difficulties over his claim of conscientious objector status to avoid the draft, eventually serving two years in a hospital instead. (He was later pardoned by President Ford.) This forced him to leave the group, and he was replaced. 

In late 1974, the band's touring began to pay off as radio stations started playing a song from their second LP, leading RCA to issue the song as a single, reissue the album, and re-sign the band. The album entered the charts in February 1975, nearly two and a half years after its release, and rose into the Top 40, eventually going gold. The single charted in March 1975 and became a Top 40 hit. Of course, the song had been written and sung by someone who was no longer in the band.  Instead, the band's amended personnel made the third album,  joined by the country stars Chet Atkins, Emmylou Harris, and Johnny Gimble.  It was released in the spring of 1975. The title track became a minor chart entry, and the album reached the Top 40. Their fourth album was released in early 1976 and was another Top 40 hit, spawning a minor country chart entry in a cover of the Buddy Holly hit "That'll Be the Day." The band's fifth album, followed in the fall of 1976. It was a disappointing seller, only getting into the Top 100 of the pop charts, though it became the band's first album to reach the country charts. A similar level of success greeted the two-LP concert recording , released in the summer of 1977. After that album was released - you guessed it, more personnel changes. The band's seventh album was released in the spring of 1978 and was another modest seller. At this point, the band fragmented again. Further changes in the personnel meant there were no more original members left.  The remaining trio of friends were left in possession of the band's name but in need of a new frontman. They held extensive auditions that resulted in the hiring of a lead singer and guitarist, followed by a reeds player. This quintet released the eighth album in the spring of 1979. Its sales were disappointing, and the group left RCA and signed to Casablanca Records, a label better known for disco than country-rock. In early 1980, more personnel changes and the band recorded its Casablanca debut. The album was preceded by a single which became a Top Ten hit, pulling the album into the Top 40 in the LP charts. A second and third single also made the charts. The group returned with its tenth album, which didn't do as well as its predecessor, but it did chart in the Top 100. Unfortunately, this marked the end of their national prominence, as Casablanca went bankrupt and the lead singer left the band, eventually becoming a successful country solo artist.   There were many changes - joiners and rejoiners, etc.  At that point, the band dissolved. In 1998, however, two members launched a new edition of the band.

Pure Prairie League is famous for "Amie" of course, a top 30 national hit in 1971.  their folowup single was "Two-Lane Highway" which stalled at # 97 on the chart...their first hit for Casablanca Records was a good one, in 1980 - "Let Me Love You Tonight" which went to # 10.  By that time, future country legend Vince Gill was singing lead vocal.

The band you are describing has to be Pure Prairie League, the song Two Lane Highway.  I loved this band, I loved them with Vince Gill, and I loved them with Craig Fuller.  Fuller, of course, teamed up with Eric Kaz to form the Kaz Fuller Band, which had minor success, and then Fuller went on to be the first replacement for Lowell George in Little Feat, for a year or two, I guess.  Pure Prairie League is still so listenable today.

...I'm soooo confused!   I think this is Pure Prairie League (we probably featured Amy/Amie/Aimee however it's spelled) before and I think the lead singer (latter day) who went solo sucessfully in Country is Vince Gill. If not I have no idea who the band is, and I really have no clue on the song at all. I think Amy is the only song of theirs I know of off the top of my head, but I do remember reading the bio once before and I'm pretty sure its PPL.
